                               Significant Moments and Dates in the Life of John R Wallis

1859        He was born April 13, 1859 in London, England
1861         Brother born April 13, 1861 - James H. Wallis
1873      Family moved from Tower of London to Chester Castle
1875         Mother dies Feb. 16 giving birth to 13th child
1875         Left home joining the 6th Cheshire, Earl of Chester's Rifle Volunteers
1877         Baptized in May into the LDS Church by William Ashworth of Beaver
1879      Joins the Royal Scots Army and sent to Glencorse, Ireland for training.
1880         Added to 2nd Battalion of the Royal Scots and sent to Fermoy, England
1881         Promoted to 1st Battalion of the Royal Scots and sent to Malta, in the Mediterranean
1884         Narrowly escapes death after catching Yellow Fever and Malaria
1884         Sent to Bechuanaland Expedition 1884-1885 Beor Conflict, South Africa
1888      Still in South Africa with the Royal Scots as Sargent - Zululand conflict 1888-1889
1891         Retires from military service and returns to London
1891         Meets his love Elizabeth in the 30 days before shipping to the U.S. They spent everyday together
1891         John comes to the U.S. on the S.S. Nevada landing in New York.
1893         Elizabeth arrives as promised. They are married in the Salt Lake Temple Oct. 10
1895         Provo Dispatch closes, He had been working with brother James H. as editor
1896         Started Rich county Round Up in Randolf, Utah. 1st paper printed May 29.  Published until April 9, 1898
1898          Moved to St. George and opened 1st Washington County News. 1st paper printed June 18.
1890       Sold Washington County News 1st time - July 28, 1900
1901       Started the American Fork Advance.  1st paper - April 25, 1901 published only 3 months.
1902       Bought out Fremont County Journal in Rexburg, Idaho. Published for 8 months and sold out.
1902          Left for Lewiston, Idaho and stayed in Largo, Idaho on Payette Lake. Present day McCall, Idaho
1905          Infamous House fire. During that time producing the Long Valley Advocate.
1907          Sold the Long Valley Advocate and headed back towards St. George , Utah
1907          Thanksgiving Day arrived in St. George.
1908          Jan. 12, 1908 2nd opening of Washington County News, 1st paper printed.
1927          Retired with lease option given to John F. Stauffer who published paper until 1933
1933          Washington County News officialy sold.on April 1 to Mr. Edger R. Simpson of Los Angeles
1938       Receives lifelong membership from Utah Press Association
1843       Celebrates 50th wedding anniversary with his "helpmate" Elizabeth Jane Wallis
1951         John R.. Wallis dies on December 15.
1963       Inducted into the Utah Newspaper Hall of Fame
